Big up to the dudes at Ugly for putting me onto this, First Serve is the new project from De La Soul’s Plug 1 and Plug 2. More colourful and poppy than most of De La’s material from the past decade or so, it’s unabashedly catchy, radio friendly rap. With beats that sound more like Gorillaz or Mark Ronson than Dilla or Pete Rock, this isn’t really for the heads. So far they’ve released one single and a mixtape (both below), and an album is expected later this year. Definitely check their Goon Time mixtape, some classic party jams on there. De La Soul are also bringing an album out later this year, so it’s double good news…

On Friday night 600 J-Dilla fans packed into the Ruby Lounge to celebrate the life and music of one of Hip Hop’s greatest ever producers. This was the second J-Dilla Changed My Life in Manchester, after last year’s event that we also put on with The Doctor’s Orders. This year however we were lucky to have a very special guest on the night; Dilla’s mother Maureen “Ma Dukes” Yancey, pictured above. Jay Dee’s close friend and collaborator Phat Kat also flew in from Detroit to host proceedings and perform a couple of his Dilla produced classics such as Cold Steel.

Mr Scruff opened up proceedings with an varied set of tracks that Dilla sampled. Mr E held it down for TTD, followed by both the Hoya Hoya founders, Jonny Dub and Illum Sphere. Spin Doc dropped a set full of classics, from The Red to Stakes Is High, and DJ A-UP and Air Adam went back to back for the last hour. All profit from the night, from the door to the T shirt and CD sales will be divided between the J-Dilla Foundation and Lupus UK. A massive thanks to all the DJs who played for free, everyone who came and especially Spin Doctor, Ma Dukes, Phat Kat and Joy…and of course J-Dilla himself, RIP.
